AANGAN IN INSTITUTIONS:
Raising Standards of Care - A Monitoring Tool for children's
institutions
(Developed in partnership with UNICEF, India)
India's children's institutions (Observation and Children's Home) have in the past been notoriously prison-like and mismanaged. This tool is a 100-point checklist to raise standards of care by translating the child friendly spirit of India's Juvenile Justice Act into actionable terms. Designed for use by state authorities (state Departments of Women and Child Development) as well as ground level institutional staff (who manage Homes), the tool ensures that the institutionalized child's voice reaches state authorities as it centers around child participation. The tool has been introduced in Maharashtra, MP, UP, Gujarat, Orissa, Assam, Karnataka, and West Bengal, Bihar, where Aangan works in partnership with the state (in some states we also partner with UNICEF).
Raising Standards of Care – Capacity Building for children’s institutions
Aangan's monitoring of children's institutions goes beyond inspections. Our effort is to identify challenges and priorities and we participate in addressing these through capacity building and ground level on-site support in Homes.
