Background

2001-2005: Aangan was founded in 2001 with the intention of reaching children in Observation Homes. Initially we started with one Home (500 children) and slowly expanded to eight Children’s Homes spread across Mumbai and Thane (1500 children).

2005-2006: Conceived and worked towards a minimum standards of care-monitoring tool to transform the children’s institution into rehabilitative and child-friendly.

2006-2008: Worked closely with the Women and Child Development Department, Maharashtra, across 100 institutions using our monitoring tool to train and build the capacity of ground level staff of Observation/Children’s Homes. Also extended our work beyond children’s institutions to prevention programs and community based programs. The Youth Pathway Project begins in four high risk neighborhoods across Mumbai.

2008-present: Introduced the minimum standard care-monitoring tool to other states, working with state Departments in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, West Bengal, Assam, Karnataka and Bihar. The Youth Pathway Project now includes risk focused programming for vulnerable girls (Shakti), at-risk boys (Pragati) and children in conflict with law (Chauraha).
